Transmission system operator (TSOs) are continuously imposing more stringent requirements on large wind power plants (WPPs). Emerging Grid Codes require large WPPs to not only ride through various fault conditions, but also contribute to network stability support as do conventional generation systems. This paper proposes a new control strategy to extend the reactive power support capability of fully rated converter (FRC-based) wind generators in compliance with Danish Grid Code. Three different control strategies are devised and their corresponding P-Q capability curves are rigorously studied. It is demonstrated that the FRC-based wind generator exhibits improved active and reactive power responses when the network-side converter (NSC) is allowed to temporarily overload during the fault periods.
