SIMULATION VALIDATION OF BIFACIAL IRRADIANCE SENSOR MOUNTING POSITION

In recent decades, photovoltaic panels have emerged as one of the leading renewable energy technologies. A new development is the advent of bifacial modules which enhance the energy production by conversion of rearside irradiance. To accurately know the performance ratio of PV parks with bifacial modules it is necessary to also measure the irradiance due to ground albedo. Kipp & Zonen produces an albedometer which can measure either the albedo or the front and rearside plane of array (POA) irradiance very accurately. However, for the measurement of the POA rearside irradiance, it matters where the mounting position within the PV plant is. To come with more insights which mounting position is advised, we have performed a simulation study using NREL developed software: Bifacial Radiance. The effect of different positions on the rear side of the PV module, different places within the PV plant, different albedo numbers, mounting heights, as well as different geographical locations with different tilt are investigated. A position at which the measured irradiance represents the average irradiance over one year on the panels is at +/- 68% height on the rear of the modules for the particular design simulated. Additionally, the effect of solar elevation during different months of the year as well as different weather conditions on selected days is also investigated. A validation of the results of the simulation using multiple sensors in the Kipp & Zonen roof setup is presented.
