As the German energy policy promotes the development of biomass as primary energy source, the totalnumber of small scale furnaces in Germany has significantly increased in the past 10 years. This leads to a higheroverall pollutant emission contribution by these facilities. The amendment in 2010 of the 1st German FederalImmission Protection Ordinance (BImSchV) reflects this development. As most furnaces are tested just underlaboratory conditions, their range of emissions under service conditions is largely unknown. This paper presents theresults of field measurements at 9 different furnaces (< 50 kW_(th)) which burn biomass fuels such as pellets and woodlogs. The measurements took place in Hamburg and the surrounding area during the heating period 2010/11. Purposeof these measurements is to highlight the representative range of actual emissions emitted by small scale furnacesoperated in Germany.During each measurement the instantaneous flue gas particle size distribution is measured online with an electrostaticcounter. The total dust loading in the flue gas is determined gravimetrically in two ways: by the standard Germanchimney sweeper method and also with the more rigorous approach of DIN 2066. The concentrations of O_2, CO_2, COand NO_X in the flue gas are monitored at the same time.
