@@ A major attention has been attached to wastewater treatment and disposal in rural areas of China. With low costs, energy saving and more simple operation, the vertical flow constructed wetlands (VFCWs) are developing to be a valid alternative for purifying wastewater in rural areas where villages lack economic resources and trained personnel. However, the conventional VFCWs have the basic disadvantages such as limited nitrogen removal, low dissolved oxygen concentration (DO) and easy clogging. In this study, two pilot-scale VFCWs were set up to determine the nitrogen removal by the system in different phases and the impact of DO on the nitrogen distribution along the depths of the VFCWs.
