Context-Adaptive Visualization Framework: a Way to Maintain Visualization Effectiveness

Visualization effectiveness reflects how well a visualization can address its stakeholders' decisional problem(s) and fulfill their intended purposes. With the rapid advances achieved in the domain of information visualization, existing visualization techniques and applications can provide reasonable support for designing and implementing visualizations that are effective under a certain context. However, they are still weak for maintaining visualization effectiveness when the underlying context changes. To maintain visualization effectiveness across different problem domains, stakeholders, purposes and/or time, this paper defines visualization context and proposes a framework to guide visualization system design and enable stakeholders to build context-adaptive visualizations. A vertical prototype is developed and discussed to prove the validity of this framework.
