Research and development activities for harnessing tides as a source electric power are part of a world trend over the last thirty years, marked by introduction of new renewable energy sources and the tapping of the local potential for exploiting these sources. The attractions of tidal to renewable energy developers are obvious. Tidal energy is an extremely predictable energy source, depending only on gravitational pull of the moon and sun and the centrifugal forces created by the rotation of the earth and moon system. Tidal current turbine extracts the kinetic energy in a moving water, to generate electricity. The kinetic energy flux in a tidal current is related to the velocity of the water passing through the cross section of the channel. The tidal barrage technology is mature, reliable and has excellent potential which is applicable in different locations due to difference of water height. Electricity generation from tidal barrages employ the same principles as hydroelectric generation, except that tidal currents flow in both directions. This paper discusses about the ocean energy, regional potential, tidal energy potential, tidal turbine currents, tidal barrage and special conditions in these process.
