@@ Introduction Selenium (Se) is essential for humans, although the risk of suboptimal Se intake increases where food choices are narrow. For example, Se intake is likely to be low in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) where maize consumption is high and fish consumption is low, although published data are sparse. In rural Burundi, a Se intake of 17 ug d-1 has been reported in adults (Benemariya et al., 1993) and in southern Malawi, a Se intake of 15-21 ug d-1 has been reported in children (Donovan et al., 1992).
