The preparation and characterization of ceramic composite tubular membrane

Membrane separation technology has been greatly developed and widely used in fields of food, petrochemical, medical and water treatment in the past decades. In this experiment, the boehmite sols and mixed sols containing PVA were firstly prepared by the sol-gel method. Then the sols were deposited on α-Al2O3 porous substrates by dip-coating method. After sintering, the composite tubular membranes with smooth and crack-free structure were obtained. The morphology of cross-section and surface of the composite tubular membrane were characterized by SEM. The structures of the sols were investigated by XRD and FTIR. The results show that smoother and thicker separation layers without particle can be successfully obtained by using mixed sols containing PVA. The composite tubular membranes are composed of α-Al2O3 porous substrates as supported layer and γ-Al2O3 dense separation layer on the outer surface.
