Technology Gap Analysis of Vacuum Coated Materials for Flexible OLED Display and Lighting Applications

In recent years there has been significant progress in the research and development of flexible OLED displays and lighting devices. Numerous prototypes, including reliable full-color AMOLED displays andflexible lighting panels, have been demonstrated. However, for commercialization, further improvements in both device performance and cost reduction are required. Vacuum web coating offers a particularly promising means of reducing cost. It combines the excellent coating properties of a vacuum process with the flexible and low-cost advantage of a web process, and is well positioned to play an important role in this field. In this paper, we present the key requirements of material systems in OLED devices, highlight potential opportunities for vacuum web coated materials, and discuss where further improvements are needed. The objective of this paper is to provide a vision to the vacuum web coating community to support the development of improved materials to accelerate the commercialization of flexible display and lighting technologies.
