This paper will provide a detailed account of a proposed roadway in St. Peter, Minnesota, where shredded tires will be integrated into the subgrade construction as a lightweight fill material. The site location presents a situation where unstable soil conditions are present, and the soft soils will require the use of staged construction and monitoring equipment during construction in order to prevent overloading of the existing unstable foundation soils. Questions regarding the impact and uncertainty of flood stability, placement and stiffness of shredded tires, and roadway construction and timeline will be addressed.
