FRAGMENT ANALYSIS FOR THE JOINT TRAUMA ANALYSIS AND PREVENTION OF INJURY IN COMBAT (JTAPIC) PROGRAM

Fragments from the threat and surrounding environment often becomeembedded in Service Members during an event in-theater. Analyzingthese fragments is crucial to the characterization and identification ofthreats. Fragment analysis is one part of the Joint Trauma Analysis andPrevention of Injury in Combat (JTAPIC) Program. JTAPIC is apartnership program that was established at the U.S. Army MedicalResearch and Material Command (USAMRMC). JTAPIC fragments areremoved during autopsy by the Armed Forces Medical ExaminerSystems (AFMES) from Service Members who were killed in action(KIA). These fragments are analyzed by the U.S. Army ResearchLaboratory (ARL). The analysis procedure includes the sterilization,scanning, and documentation of the physical properties of the fragments.ARL determines the elemental composition of fragments using bothqualitative and quantitative analysis procedures. The analysis results areused in event recreations and modeling and simulation. They resultsalso assist JTAPIC partners with test designs and in understandingpersonnel vulnerabilities to threats.
