摘要

The Fifth Generation Target Study was a conceptual design task for a large target drone aircraft capable of representing key 5th generation fighter signature and performance attributes. The target drone's intended uses are to test air-to-air and surface-to-air missiles, and to ensure that modern tracking systems are capable of identifying and targeting 5th generation fighters. Phase III encompassed the effort to replace the Williams FJ44-4 with the General Electric J85 to reduce flyaway cost and to finalize the aerodynamic configurations of the two "best and final" designs. These changes required significant re-engineering of the designs and additional wind tunnel testing. These efforts were largely successful and the final configurations met the performance requirements specified for this study. At the conclusion of the study, performance data for both designs was provided to the sponsor for future consideration.
