In order to improve energy efficiency and reduce green house gasemissions, the aluminum smelting industry has been continuouslyworking on reducing both anode effect frequency (AEF) andduration (AED). However, there is still a long way to go toachieve zero anode effect (AE) on very high amperage, lowspecific power consumption cells due to the added complexity ofthe process. A new program to quickly terminate AEs has beendeveloped by Light Metals Research Centre, the University ofAuckland, in conjunction with the efforts of the Asia PacificPartnership on Clean Development and Climate (APP) to facilitateinvestment in clean technologies and to accelerate the sharing ofenergy efficient best practices. A pilot project was initiated to testan automatic Anode Effect Termination (AET) program on 400kAcells in Zhongfu, China. This paper demonstrates the success ofthe new anode effect termination (AET) program in killing AEson this cell technology without conflicting with normal celloperations. The resulting decrease in average anode effectduration (AED) is demonstrated.
