The SAGE3 project is demonstrating technologies to reduce the environmental impact of large turbofan engines utilised by long range aircraft. The integrated systems nature of the technologies coupled with the high Technology Readiness Level targeted for Clean Sky technologies requires that the technology validation schemes include highly representative system operating conditions. Full engine demonstration provides the necessary systems application and representative conditions for many of the technologies but is not the sole demonstration route available. Provision of correct conditions and utilisation of the demonstrator vehicle must be balanced against risk to the successful conclusion of experiments in the management of SAGE_3. Fan, engine externals, low pressure turbine and structures technologies selected for demonstration are described and the challenges of managing such a programme and integrating the technological contributions of a diverse and developing group of contributing organisations are discussed. It is concluded that there is a continuing need for complex demonstration projects such as SAGE3 to validate engine technologies in the search for ever lower aviation emissions.
