Comparison of Cost Effectiveness of Various Corrosion-Resistant Reinforcing Bars and Other Corrosion Protection Strategies for New Bridge Decks
A service life model has been applied to predict the performance of corrosion-mitigation alternatives, including the use of MMFX-II reinforcing steel, epoxy-coated reinforcing steel, solid stainless reinforcing steel, stainless clad reinforcing steel, and high performance concrete (HPC), in a bridge deck setting. This was done to provide a rational basis for performing a life cycle cost analysis. This service life model is based on statistical distributions of exposure conditions, concrete quality and cover depth, and discrete estimates of the reinforcing chloride threshold, and predicts the amount of corrosion-related damage occurring over time. The base input deck properties and exposure conditions were selected to fall within ranges measured on actual structures in Virginia and Iowa, and represent a severe set of conditions. The HPC was modeled based on an excellent quality, low permeability concrete having a diffusion coefficient one-sixth that for the base concrete.
