Bench-scale testing of an organoclay-based reactive core mat (RCM) wasperformed in the Integrated Contaminated Sediment Testing Apparatus Column(ICSTAC), a coupled consolidation and contaminant transport device. In the device,polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB)-contaminated sediments were placed beneath the RCMand an overlying 10 cm thick layer of layer of clean sand. After inducing advectivediffusiveprocesses to occur in the sediment-RCM-sand column, the sand was removedand deposit-feeding, freshwater oligochaete worms Lumbriculus variegates were exposedto the sand in 28-day bioaccumulation tests. The results of these biouptake experiments,as well as efforts to characterize the PCB contaminant profile within the tested worms,sands, and sediment, are presented. Breakthrough of PCBs through the reactive core matwas not observed in the biouptake experiments. While further analysis and testing isnecessary to further clarify the results, it appears that the contaminants may have beensequestered within the RCM.
