This paper discusses the concept and issues related to the development of a flexible rolling hybrid vehicle drive train laboratory test platform. This test facility is being designed using a modular construction. It can be used to test various configurations of hybrid drive trains, electric vehicle drive trains and even conventional vehicle drive trains without requiring a significant effort to reconfigure. This test facility is being designed and controlled in a manner that physically emulates the real use of a vehicle running on an actual road. This paper also discusses inertia compensation approaches and the coordinate control of the platform with a vehicle dynamometer. This Laboratory test facility is now under development by The Advanced Vehicle Research Center (AVRC) at Danville, Virginia, financially supported by the US Department of Energy.
