摘要

Recent and widespread development of various drug resistant microorganisms has increased interest in the use of alternative antimicrobial agents. Silver ions have broad spectrum antimicrobial properties and have often been used effectively in combination with other drugs for topical wound treatment. Varying the delivery method of silver ions to common wound infecting microorganisms affects its bioavailability and/or antimicrobial activity. Adaptation of antimicrobial silver by use of controlled release (zeolite exchange or liposome encapsulation) may result in more effective controlled and targeted delivery of silver ions to minimize the development of possible side effects whilst maintaining its antimicrobial activity. This investigation shows that zeolite exchanged and liposome encapsulated silver ions effectively reduced the viability of microbial cultures at concentrations significantly lower than commercial silver preparations.
