Self-assembly technique has been applied to generate sensitive magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) probes in our work. "Controlled clustering" of multiple iron oxide nanocrystals inside polymeric micelle cores or "controlled anchoring" of them on nanotemplates can lead to obvious enhancement of probe sensitivity. Incorporation of gadolinium chelates within polyelectrolyte shells led to improved probe detection limit. These probes have demonstrated excellent imaging contrast during cancer diagnosis, drug carrier modification and cell tracking.
