In this work, new nanocomposite materials composed of unsaturated polyester bio-resins containing nanoclay particles and natural fibers were fabricated by liquid resin infusion. Processing results and mechanical properties were compared to conventional composites with glass fibers. Several samples were prepared with different types of nanoclays in a proportion varying between 1 and 5% of weight. A series of nanocomposites with bio-resin and natural fibers were manufactured and tested, the mechanical properties of which being compared with standard composites made out of bio-resin and glass fibers. Finally, flammability resistance of prepared nanocomposites was evaluated by smoke density tests. The smoke generated and the mass loss were characterized and compared to petroleum-based polyester composites.
