Data Manipulation by PostGIS as a Free/Open Source Database for Web GIS Applications

In recent years Information Technology is growing very fast. GIS1 applications specially Web GIS applications are also following this progress and therefore new opportunities have been made available to the user community. This paper studies how GIS has evolved during time and shows that in recent years GIS applications have grown a lot. It is shown that through local governments some new possibilities including special database systems have been provided for end users of complex GIS applications. This paper introduces PostGIS and discusses its features, spatial functions. Moreover, it explains the connection between PostGIS as Free/Open source database and MapServer as Free/Open source Web GIS data rendering software. The fonts of MapServer pages changed to Persian styles and also to show the efficiency of PostGIS it is used with real data and the results are discussed.
