In this paper, lignin sizing agent was synthesized in alkaline conditions taking lignin of poplar auto-catalyzed ethanol pulping and epoxypropyl dimethyl dodecyl ammonium chloride (EDDAC) as raw materials. The effect of the ratio of EDDAC monomer to lignin (fixed lignin amount: 2g), NaOH concentration, reaction temperature and time on the sizing results were studied by orthogonal experiments, and the synthesized product was analyzed through infrared spectrogram (IR). The optimum conditions were as follows: the ratio of EDDAC monomer to lignin 2:1; NaOH concentration 1.0mol / L; 70 °C; 6h. The poplar auto-catalytic lignin was modified with ammonium chloride under above optimum conditions, the lignin sizing agent was added to handsheets, when the adding amount was 1.0%, the result of paper absorbency reduced 59.3g/m2.
