Water-soluble chitosan quarter ammonium, N-[(2-hydroxy-3-trimethylammonium) propy1] chitosan chloride (HTCC), was synthesized by chitosan and 2, 3-epoxypropyltrimethyl ammonium chloride. The structure of HTCC was confirmed by FTIR. In this study, Zeta potential of fiber which had absorbed HTCC, retention of fines fraction, air permeability and tensile strength were measured. The results showed that when the dose of HTCC had a substitution degree of 0.1% or 0.5, retention of fines fraction was 85.2%, air permeability was 24.5 cm3/(min·cm2), and tensile strength was 1.54 kN/m. While retention of ash was studied, retenti on of ash with 1#HTCC could reach 28.5%, compared with 17.3% of guar gum when their dosage was both 0.5‰.
