This study evaluates the use of wheat straw as a raw material in papermaking fibres and energy. Hot water treatment followed by alkaline peroxide bleaching produced pulp for printing and writing papers while the hot water treatment followed by mechanical refining produced pulp for packaging materials. In both cases residuals were available for energy production, in the form of fines or dissolved solids. The results from the first approach indicated that it is possible to produce pulp with over ISO 75% brightness and a yield of over 50%. The paper properties of produced pulps are equivalent or even superior to those of soda pulp, while the bleached yield is clearly higher. The results of the second approach showed that the amount of useful fibres is 49% of the original raw material and the amount of fines 41% of the original raw material. The papermaking properties were relatively poor suggesting that they could only be used in mixtures with other pulps, or in moulded fibre packages.
