This study focused on the membrane fouling during a long term operation by the combined MBR adopted to treat the synthetic dyeing wastewater. The extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) as a major fouling component in membrane bioreactor (MBR) systems were investigated. Results showed that the cake layer resistance accounted for more than 60% in the total resistance while the internal membrane resistance took a possession of less than lO%.Analysis also illustrated that higher proportion of protein in the EPS both of the active sludge and the foulants on the membrane surface than other kinds of wastewater MBR treatments. UV-visible spectral scanning was used in the experiment, detecting some dye intermediates existed in the MBR effluent. IR detection indicated that dye intermediates and protein obviously existed in the foulants on the membrane.
