Correlation between traffic generated noise and air pollution in two mid size European cities: Trinational Trafic, Air, Bruit et Sant project - TRI TABS

Disentangling cardiovascular effects of road traffic noise and air pollution require city-specific analyses, as their spatial distribution varies between cities. We compared local data of two mid-size European cities, namely Basel and Girona. Modelled CadnaA software based day-and night-time annual mean noise levels (Lday and Lnight) were, respectively, 52.7dBA and 40.6dBA (Basel) and 64.8dBA and 55.7dBA (Girona). Annual mean nitrogen dioxide (NO_2) levels were 31μg/m~3 for Basel (modelled) and 26.2ug/m3 for Girona (measured). The NO_2-L_(day) and NO_2-L_(night) correlations were, respectively, 0.22 and 0.19 (with modelled NO_2) and 0.25 and 0.28 (with measured NO_2) in Basel and 0.62 and 0.61 in Girona (with measured NO_2). Our data confirm large differences in the correlations between cities even when comparing measured NO_2 versus modelled noise in both cities. City-specific determinants of the spatial correlations will be further investigated, and compared within and across Basel, Girona and Grenoble (TRI-TABS project).
