Survey of thrust reversal noise after landing for further noise measures at Narita Airport

This paper makes a report on the survey of thrust reversal noise for the purpose of airport capacity expansion at Narita Airport. Thrust reversal after landing has a large contribution to noise exposure in a residential area on the side of runway. Engine power setting for reverse thrust changes dependent on various conditions of precipitation, air-traffic congestion, etc. We have repeatedly carried out noise measurements next to the runway four times during the last ten years in order to estimate actual situation of reverse thrust usage. In that measurement, a lot of sound level meters were set up at a fixed interval along the side of runway. As a result, it turned out that usage of reverse thrust changes dependent on aircraft types and airlines and that the rate of using idle reverse thrust gradually increases year after year. Using the knowledge acquired from analysis of the measurement result, we made a trial calculation of effects of restricting use of thrust reversal early in the morning on the cumulative noise exposure in order to examine whether it is effective in the decrease of noise exposure on the side of runway toward the realization of airport capacity expansion.
