CLASSIFICATION OF ARCHITECTURAL SPACES FROM THE VIEWPOINT OF ACOUSTIC COMFORT

Although there have been a number of studies in the literature regarding acoustic comfort and soundscape, there is still a need for a widely accepted system, especially for indoor spaces, leading to an assessment framework. The study of acoustic comfort is multidisciplinary, relating to fields of acoustics, psychology, sociology, and architecture. This research aims to explore such a system/framework by examining three different aspects of indoor spaces, namely architectural space type, perceived sound environment and objective acoustic indices. This paper mainly presents an analysis of the first and second aspect. The classifications of livable enclosed environments for human beings are assessed under three aspects: the predefined function, user's perspective and the architectural aspects. In addition, the three key approaches, formal organization, spatial relationships, and circulation patterns within spaces are studied in detail to evaluate the architectural composition of enclosures and are used as a space dissolution technique. In addition, peculiar architectural elements are evaluated with regards to their acoustic characteristics. The final part of this paper includes soundscape analysis that is carried regarding the pre-defined function, architectural aspects, and user's perspective.
