For the design and layout of noise protection walls an automatic planning tool is essential. This tool improves the planning process for new traffic infrastructure, but is also vital in the frame of noise action planning. This paper will outline different approaches for an optimization of noise protection walls: a) To fulfill the limit values at chosen receiver points b) To minimize the costs for each protected dwelling or the facade length above limits c) To minimize the total costs for noise measures (walls and windows). d) To minimize the WTI (Swiss method), which combines the effectiveness (percentage of reached target values) and the benefit/cost relationship in a sensitivity diagram. For a showcase we will present the different outcomes depending on the used method.
