Safety in urban areas - a concept for the exploration of public spaces

In this study, factors which positively influence safety and have an impact on the conception of safety of public spaces in urban areas are supposed to be determined by analyzing the dynamics of safety arrangements. According to the Soundscape-concept, images of safety and insecurity of the persons involved their interdependence with creating safety and their effects on actual local safety arrangements will be explored. Therefore, interviews with "local experts" and acoustic measurements will be carried out at the same time. Special focus will be put upon the reconstruction of decisive factors for the perception as well as the creation / development of safe places. The aim is to give access to the images of safety and their relevance for necessary intervention and to reveal both successful and unsuccessful interventions. The project "Nauener Platz", a further study in an area of Berlin and a recent study in car sound design will serve as a basic model for discussing the procedures and the results obtained.
