MEASUREMENT OF SOUND EXPOSURE ON ORCHESTRAL MUSICIANS IN DENMARK

The standard ISO 9612 has been applied in measurement of the occupational noise exposure of musicians in two Danish orchestras: Aarhus Symphony Orchestra and The orchestra of the Royal Danish Opera. The measurements were carried out for each of three tasks: practicing (in solitude), orchestra rehearsals and performances. Supplementary room-acoustic investigation, in-ear measurements and measurements of different performances were conducted along with interview-based surveys and audiological tests. The measurements indicate L_(Ex,8h) from 82 to 99 dB. Notable differences were found between indentified tasks, different instruments, and different repertoires, as well as between the two orchestras. Some of the possible factors that may have a significant impact on how the levels of sound exposure can be reduced - in a musically acceptable way - are discussed.
