How can large reverberant rooms be used for group conversation?

The paper concerns an assessment of applicable acoustical parameters including their degree of possible optimisation, in order to achieve suitable acoustics for group conversation in rooms where reverberation times cannot meet regulatory requirements. Investigations are made using a historically listed assembly hall, without the possibility for a radical degree of reverberation control, which is suggested used as a project work environment in an educational institution, the results of which can be applied to other large reverberant spaces such as atria, reception areas in public buildings and open office areas. The work includes evaluations using computer simulation, design of acoustical screens, a discussion of speech levels and their influence on background noise and an analysis of the correlation between objective parameters.
