STUDY ON CAPACITY OF SEA WATER DESALINATION IN TIANJIN COASTAL ZONE

Sea water desalination is a solution of broad prospect to obtain fresh water. Situated to the west of the Bohai Bay, Tianjin has great advantages to develop desalination engineering to solve the water shortage problem. However, the discharge of brine may have certain impact on the surrounding environment. It is not only important to assess the environmental impact of every single desalination engineering, but also necessary to understand the capacity of sea water desalination in the coastal zone. In this paper, the characteristics of water exchange in Tianjin coastal waters was studied using the hydrodynamic-dispersion model based on the concept of water exchange relation matrix at first. The results show that water exchange in the middle area of Tianjin coastal water is greater than that in the northern and southern areas. Then, the capacity of sea water desalination and the corresponding optimized locations of the desalination plants were determined using linear programming method under different restrictions of eco-environment. The results of the research suggest that it is better to develop desalination engineering in the middle area of Tianjin coastal zone than in northern or southern area.
