The alteration of the flow regime is one of the primary reasons for river ecosystem degradation. After the operation of the Three Gorges Reservoir, some ecological problems downstream emerged. So, it is necessary to assess the alteration of downstream eco-hydrology due to the reservoir operation. The Indicators of Hydrologic Alteration (IHA) were adopted to represent the eco-hydrologic features of downstream flow regime. Two existing approaches, namely, the Ranges of Variability Approach and the Histogram Matching Approach, and a new method, Set Pair Analysis were applied to estimate the alteration of the 33 IHA. The estimated results of the three approaches were substantially consistent and slightly different in 3 indicators of the total 33. The overall assessment results are listed as follows. The monthly averaged discharges in January, February, March, May and October were distinctly altered, whereas those in the other months were slightly altered; the magnitude, frequency and timing of annual minimum flows were greatly modified while alterations of most annual maximum flows were relatively slight; similarly, the frequency and duration of low flow pulse were changed significantly, however, alterations of the high flow pulse were a little; the rising rate and falling rate of two adjacent days were moderately changed and the variation of number of hydrologic reversals was small.
