RACKING RESISTANCE OF PANEL-SHEATHED SHEAR WALLS WITH OPENING

This study reviews the experimental results and FE-analysis of wood-framed shear walls with various opening configurations and boundary conditions. It was found that the racking resistance of wall panel with opening was influenced by both opening configurations and boundary conditions. The racking resistance of a wall with opening increased as the opening area decreased, and that this trend was influenced by the connection of studs to horizontal members. The racking resistance of walls whose studs were fully connected to the foundation showed good agreement with the racking resistance estimated by means of "Sugiyama's opening coefficient" without reduction, and that of the walls of which only end studs were connected to the foundation showed lower resistance than fully connected wall panels. It was also found that the effects of the vertical loads and loading beam stiffness on the racking resistance was very little in fully connected shear walls, but they were not negligible for the wall panel of which the vertical connections beside the opening were removed. Based on these experimental and numerical results, a design method for panel-sheathed shear walls with opening is proposed in this paper
