This study presents a systematic approach for investigating the effect of residual stress on the ultimate load-carrying capacity of high strength steel welded box columns. The residual stress characteristics of high strength steel mem bers with welded box-section' varied with section size and yield strength of steel are presented. To investigate the effect of residual stress on the overall stability of axially compressed columns, the finite element model accounting for residual stress and initial geometric imperfection is built. The measured experimental residual stress over several box-sections with various width-thickness ratios is used for the finite element model to investigate the column curves. The upper and lower limits of the stability factor for high strength steel welded box columns are investiga ted. The results show that the stability factor for high strength steel axially compressed columns with welded box section is in accordance with that of type b section columa The effect of residual stress on the ultimate capacity of high strength steel welded box columns is varying with slenderness ratio.
