A Proposed Control Architecture for Smart Microgrids

Current status of electrical power grid is not capable of meeting the future's power consumption. Smart microgrid (MG) can solve this problem by injecting extra power to bulk power grid or isolating itself and mitigating demand. The main objective of this paper is to present new control architecture for smart MGs. The control architecture involves smart nodes and smart MG controller. By using this architecture, MG can easily manage its internal market and have an opportunity to operate independently in case of power grid disconnection or an emergency operation. A typical algorithm for energy management in grid connected mode along with a case study, using Homer software, is included in this paper to show how this control architecture performs energy management in either case.
