A dual circulating fluidized bed pilot plant was operated in chemical looping reforming conditions. Threetypes of feedstock were used. A biomass gasification product gas like mixture of methane, carbon dioxide,carbon monoxide and hydrogen (requested syngas), a gas mixture with almost the same elementalbalance like the requested syngas (surrogate syngas) and a methane carbon dioxide mixture. The secondreactor was operated as regenerator (air-reactor). The required heat input occurred in the air-reactorwith additional fuel fed into it. The reforming catalyst was a nickel based material provided by RentechInc.. Reforming of the mentioned gas compositions and dry reforming have been investigated with focuson particle performance towards reforming, particle abrasion and long term stability.Constant operation for 36 hours was possible without any decrease in catalyst activity. Particle lossthrough abrasion of particles was low. The overall performance of the catalyst was good, low carbonformation has been indicated in the dry reforming scenario. Based on these findings some advantages ofthe fluidized bed system can be indicated. Minimization of the reactor volume is possible. Less catalyst is required per unit fuel feed. Steam is not required or only in little amounts. Temperature can be maximized, since the reactors can be refractory lined.
