Aluminum powders are used in propellant, pyrotechnic and explosive formulations, as well as incombustion systems, to increase energy and energy-density. However, aluminum particles areusually covered by an oxide protective layer causing long ignition delays. Shortening ignitiontime and enhancing combustion can be accomplished by using powders with high reactionsurfaces. A method for promoting ignition and increasing reactivity of aluminum particlesthrough the formation of porous aluminum particles has been developed. Study of theeffectiveness of the method developed reveals remarkable ignition enhancement of the aluminumpowders. This paper presents characteristics of highly-reactive porous aluminum powdersproduced via a thermo-chemical method, and their effect on enhancing ignition and combustion,as well as reducing agglomeration in aluminized propellants.
