Micron-sized spherical aluminum powders were used in hexogen-based (RDX-based) thermobaric explosive (TBE). Three types of fashioned explosive charges with the quality of 160 g, 400 g and 500g were used in this work. The energy of TBE was tested by experiment of underwater explosion in a water pool of Φ8(m) × 8 (m), and the piezoelectric gauge (PCB Piezotronics, Inc., range: 68950 kPa, sensitivity (±15%): 0.073 mV/kPa) was used to measure the peak overpressure and the first bubble period of the aluminized explosive and the TNT charge at the slant stand-off 3m and fixed height of 4m. The test results indicate that the great the mass of an aluminized explosive, the higher the total "useful" energy. The total useful energy of the aluminized explosive exceeded Trotyl (TNT) equivalent of 2.0 times, and the bubble energy takes a larger proportion of over 80% in aluminized in underwater explosion.
