To face threats such as IEDs, mines or blast, industrialists had to optimize the design of armored vehicles, by spreading the concept of V shaped bottoM hulls, and to adapt materials. Thus, new standards for steels with specific mechanical properties were defined: medium hardness 440 HB with high levels of toughness and ductility. In this paper, the characteristics of a new grade, named MARS? 220, developed by INDUSTEEL (ArcelorMittal), are presented. Its high mechanical properties together with an improved workability, especially bending and welding, are compared with standard Rolled Homogeneous Armor steels (<400HB).
