RESULTS AND DISCUSSION OF MULTIPLE EXPERIMENTS ON THE TIMING OF COGNITIVE JUDGMENTS BASED ON TRAFFIC CONDITIONS

With regard to the causes of traffic accidents, it is generally estimated that most of accidents are caused by human errors, inattention or other human factors. Recent progress in assistance technology for active safety has made assistance systems possible that can compensate for driver error and inattention. Warning from the vehicle must be made at an appropriate timing for the driver so that he/she does not feel uncomfortable. Regarding this point, we examined how the timing of drivers’ cognitive judgments is determined based on experiments we have conducted to date. The results showed that velocity and distance at the appropriate timings are expressed with a linear equation when plotted in a diagram. Based on this result, it is conjectured that the proper timing is determined by the inverse of TTC, and a correction term related to the inverse of distance. It is suggested that this finding be considered when determining the timing for assistance provided by a vehicle.
