Monitoring Crop N status with Remote Sensing-a Case Study of Winter Wheat in North China Plain

Crop nitrogen status is a key indicator for evaluating crop condition, increasing yield and improving grain quality. Non-destructive and rapid assessment of leaf nitrogen at local or regional scale was in urgent needs in application of variable field management. This study aims at identifying the quantitative relationship between leaf nitrogen accumulation and canopy reflectance spectra in winter wheat, and to derive a model to monitor N nutrition status in wheat with satellite remote sensing data at regional scale. The reflectance at different bands of satellite remote sensed data (IRS P6 AWIFS) was simulated with the spectral data from field survey. The relationships between the simulated reflectance and the N status were analyzed and a model was build to estimate the crop N status with simulated reflectance data. Lastly the model was adapted to be applied with real satellite reflectance, and the N status maps of Shandong province and Henan province were acquired and analyzed.
