Land Cover Assesment Using Moderate Resolution Satellite Imagery in Mexico

Mexico is facing rapid processes of land use/cover change. Land cover assessments are crucial in providing accurate and updated data for supporting land management decisions. Many studies have shown that moderate resolution imagery is effective for mapping large areas at low cost. This paper presents an assessment of the MODerate-resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) data in mapping land use/cover in a single pilot area in central Mexico. Land cover classifications were carried out using several approaches and different subsets of input bands. As some land cover classes exhibit high spectral confusion during the dry season, classification strategies which take into account additional information yield land use/cover maps with reasonable accuracy.
