Hazards s uch as wildland fi res, vol canic eruptions, e arthquakes, tsu namis, land sub sidence, landslides, a valanches, st orms and floods are unpreventable an d in evitable n atural eve nts d ue to Earth's constant process of change. Fortunately, we can often minimize the likelihood of such hazards turning into disasters that de stroy human life and pr operty. One way we c an re duce risks is to use Ear th obse rvations for monitoring and pr edicting eme rging haz ards, pr oviding early warnings and r esponding and a dapting to those disasters that we cannot fully avoid. This paper describes several initiat ives of the Grou p on Earth Observations (GEO) as well as pr ojects de veloped by GEO Me mbers and Participating Organiz ations for reducing loss from disasters.
