Post-Detonation Combustion of Aluminum Particles: Aluminum Particle Size Dependence

Small-scale detonation experiments were conducted to investigate the post-detonation reactivity of a fuel-rich, aluminized plastic bonded explosive. The particle size of the fuel in the explosive charge varied from 1 to 120 μm. Effective burning times are extracted from time-resolved emission spectroscopy measurements of the expanding blast wave, with aluminum monoxide acting as the primary indicator of the presence of aluminum combustion. Burning times increased with particle size, much like the trends observed in standard combustion experiments. However, the burning times measured in the explosive environment are up to two orders of magnitude shorter in time. Optical pyrometry and high-speed digital images accompany this set of streak emission spectroscopy measurements.
