The new federal administration's primary focus will undoubtedly be the global economic challenges but climate change is clearly a very high priority, The recent oil price volatility has demonstrated that solutions to climate change must seriously consider energy security. Conversion of the transportation sector to electric hybrids is being discussed as a means of improving energy security while making a major reduction in carbon emissions. All current approaches to reducing or eliminating carbon emissions for electricity production are significantly more expensive than current commercial technologies. Use of low carbon emission technologies such as wind, solar, and biomass for power generation are increasing, but they are incapable of supplying base load needs. The only technologies capable of sustaining US base load capacity and potential growth are coal, gas, and nuclear, Nuclear has a long lead time to commercial operation, and concerns about long-term disposal of waste have not been resolved. Natural gas, though lower in carbon emissions than coal, still produces carbon dioxide and its availability and price have proven to be volatile.
