This paper reviews the research work on modeling and control of fuel cell systems for distributed generation applications. The paper first summarizes the authors' research work on continuous dynamic model development and control of proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFC), solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC), and fuel cell distributed generation (FCDG) systems. Discrete event system (DES) and hybrid system models are then introduced for fuel cell modeling and control. A hybrid system model of a simplified FCDG system is given as an example to show that the hybrid system approach captures both continuous and discrete dynamics in the system.
