@@ Introduction Membrane fouling is a major obstacle to wider application of membrane bioreactor (MBR) to wastewater treatment. Soluble microbial products (SMPs) in the MBR supernatant are recognized as the major foulant. The evolution process and irreversibility of membrane fouling are two important aspects to be concerned. These fouling behaviors are potentially affected by several membrane properties (such as hydrophobicity and pore size) and foulant properties (such as hydrophilic/hydrophobic composition of SMPs). This study aims to provide a comprehensive insight into the effect of these factors, so as to assist in the development of antifouling strategies such as membrane selection and supernatant conditioning.
