AECOM Environment is performing work at a Superfund site in centralMichigan where native reductive dechlorination processes are resulting in the accumulationof vinyl chloride in groundwater. In order to better understand the native dechlorinationprocesses and their apparent shortcomings, a comprehensive biogeochemical surveywas conducted. The purpose of this biogeochemical survey was to discern key factorscontributing to the incomplete reductive dechlorination of trichloroethylene at the site. Avariety of parameters including standard geochemical indicators and molecular biologicalindicators were evaluated as a part of the biogeochemical survey. The resulting data wasused to revise the existing site conceptual model, aid in the development of an enhancedreductive dechlorination strategy, and provide baseline biogeochemical information foran enhanced reductive dechlorination pilot study within the source zone of the plume.This paper discusses the techniques employed during the biogeochemical survey, thesubsequent results, and their influence on remedial strategy development.
